Buck Island, St. Croix
Take a sailing tour to Buck Island; you'll understand why the island and its reef have been made a National Park. There are concessionaires that offer full and half day trips to Buck Island, so getting there is not a problem. Usually the problem lies in getting you to leave. Turtle Beach on Buck's west end has been voted one of the world's most beautiful beaches by National Geographic. The underwater trail is a snorkelers' dream come true. If you're not a snorkeler, don't worry! Your professional guides can make assured snorkelers of even the most timid swimmers. Take a guided snorkeling tour of the underwater trail and surround yourself with coral, angel fish, and crustaceans. Since the trail is protected by the national park system, capacity is limited - so do not delay in reserving your space on one of several boats that sail to Buck Island daily.

Buck Island Reef National Monument provides
a protected
habitat for several threatened species.
All About Buck Island
Uninhabited Buck
Island is six thousand feet long and a half mile wide, rises to 340
feet above sea level and lies 1.5 miles off the northeast side of St.
Croix. The 19,000 acre Buck Island Reef National Monument includes 176
acres of land, which has an overland nature trail and white coral sand
beaches, is a haven for endangered brown pelicans and a nesting area
for three species of sea turtles, and 4,554 acres of water and coral
reef system. Two-thirds of the island is surrounded by a coral
barrier reef, which includes a Marine Garden area, both closed to fishing.
The underwater trail is one of three in the United States, and meanders through coral grottoes, coral patch reefs, and allows snorkelers to surround themselves with abundant, colorful reef sea fans, and maybe even a turtle.
First protected in 1948 to preserve one of the finest marine gardens in the Caribbean Sea, the area was proclaimed a national monument in 1961 by John F. Kennedy. Before Bill Clinton left office, he enlarged the protected area to 19,000 acres.
Please use caution while swimming and snorkeling at Buck Island. Do not feed the fish, do not step on the coral or reef, do not litter, and please, enjoy the scenery.
