What is the telephone area code?
The area code for the USVI is 340.
Are there any museums?
With all the history that surrounds St. Croix, you better believe we have museums! Some reflect specific aspects of our history and culture, some showcase art, pottery, and more. Museums are even housed in plantations, private residences and working factories.
Are there casinos on St. Croix?
You bet! (Get it?) There are two casinos on St. Croix. On the east end, Divi Carina Bay has slots and table games, plus entertainment every weekend. In Christiansted, the small but popular Caravelle Hotel and Casino has slots and no table gaming. You must be at least 21 years old to enter the casino and provide proper I.D.
Are there any parks?
For a small island, we have a large number of parks. St. Croix has dedicated National Park Service land in Christiansted, Frederiksted, Salt River, Sandy Point, and Buck Island Underwater National Monument. There are also a few dedicated smaller park areas perfect for picnics and play time, such as Cramers Park, Canegata Ball Park and the Frederiksted Pool.
Can I get a driving map of St. Croix?
Driving on the left in unfamiliar territory can be a little intimidating, so a navigable map of St. Croix is helpful. We produce the St. Croix Pocket Map, a handy little map with all of the major and minor roads clearly indicated, major intersections noted, estate names marked, points of interest, beaches…the list goes on and on. Pick it up at the airport, or purchase our Vacation Planner or Relocation Planner which include a copy of the map.
Are taxis accessible? What do they cost?
Taxis are readily available at the airport, hotels, and resorts. You can also call ahead to arrange a pick up/drop off. There are also Taxi Vans that locals use, which you can flag them down anywhere. Taxi Vans are clearly marked with a taxi light on the roof of the vehicle. The distance traveled determines the cost.
Is there any public transportation I can use, like buses?
There is public bus system called VITRAN, but you will want to leave plenty of time (and then some) to get to your destination. The buses are nice and air-conditioned. You will notice bus stops around the island.
Do I have to secure my infant/toddler in their own seat? Can I rent one?
Yes! Most car rental companies have car seats available. To ensure you have this covered, ask your rental agent at time of car booking. Infants are not required to be restrained in their own seat in a taxi van, though it is recommended that toddlers be secured with a seatbelt.
Do I have to wear my seatbelt?
YES, YES, YES! It is the law and we want to keep you safe.
How old do you have to be to rent a car?
For insurance purposes, you must be at least 25 years old to rent a vehicle.
Will I need to rent a vehicle?
Evaluate your style of vacation. If you mostly want to stay in town and stick to the beaten path, then there are plenty of taxis to get you where you want to go. If you get the itch to explore, there are great open air taxis that will take you on a tour of the island and give you all the interesting facts and historical background. If you want to explore even more and get out on your own, then we recommend that you rent a car! Outside of the towns, not many people walk around, so take into consideration where you are staying.
Is my U.S. driver’s license valid?
As long as it has not expired in the states, your valid U.S. drivers license will be valid in the USVI, too. If you plan to stay longer than 60 days, the law says to obtain a valid Virgin Islands drivers license.
Do you REALLY drive on the left side of the road?
It’s true, we drive on the left. We are one of the few places that drive on the left and historians are still arguing over why we do this. Don’t worry, you’ll get the hang of it quickly because most of the roads are 2 lanes. For the most part, traffic travels at a slow to moderate pace. But please remember to wear your seat belt! It’s the law.
I don’t drive. Will St. Croix work for me?
Sure, with some planning. Let someone else do the driving while you sit back and enjoy the beautiful scenery. Taxis are one option to get you from place to another, and can be arranged by you or your host hotel, restaurant or shop. Consider an island tour in an open air safari bus to get a feel for the diversity of the island. Then use the taxis or buses to go back to the places you want to explore on your own. There are plenty of options to get you going.
I have trouble walking. Will St. Croix work for me?
Well, you may not want to go hike to the tidal pools, but you can take a 4-wheel jeep tour there! Both Christiansted and Frederiksted are historic towns, built in the late 1700’s. The sidewalks can be challenging with uneven stones, curbs and bricks. Just take your time and walk carefully and you should be fine.
I am disabled and in a wheelchair. Will St. Croix work for me?
There are many businesses, activities and accommodations that cater to guests with special needs.
Where can I get some planning materials like guides, maps, brochures, etc.?
Well, right here, on GoToStCroix.com. Our website is full of guides, maps, and lots of information to plan your trip. You can also pick up a copy of the St. Croix Pocket Map, St. Croix This Week, Explore magazine and more at the airport, car rental locations and at news stands across the island.
Can I drink the tap water?
Our tap water is perfectly safe to drink, especially when it's filtered as it is in many places. No 'Montezuma’s Revenge' here. When ordering water at a restaurant, you might want to specify bottled or tap.
Do I need special postage to send mail?
Nope. We use the U.S. Postal System, so what ever the price of a first class stamp or post-card stamp is in the States, it's the same here. Bring your own or stop in one of our post offices to purchase stamps for letters and postcards.
Will my cell phone work in the islands?
Yes and no. First, be sure your plan includes St. Croix in the coverage so you will not be charged outrageous roaming fees. Second, service will depend on your carrier. Currently, you should have cellular service if you use T-Mobile or AT&T. We do not have local service with Verizon. You can also check with local service providers like Viya or Liberty for pay-as-you-go options.
Can I check my email?
Wifi hot spots are popping up everywhere on St. Croix if you want to bring your laptop or tablet. Most resorts and hotels have a computer available for guest use where you can check your email. Many cafes and restaurants also have wifi available for their guests.
What is the legal drinking age?
The legal drinking age is lower than most of the United States, but you must be at least 18 to order an alcoholic beverage on St. Croix. Please note, you must be at least 21 to enter the casinos. Be prepared to present proper I.D. for entry or to be served alcoholic beverages.
I’ve heard St. Croix has a crime problem. Is that true?
Have you looked in your local paper lately? Crime in St. Croix is no worse than it is in small town America. When you are on vacation, sometimes your head is in the clouds and unfortunately people will take advantage of that. Just follow the same rules you would follow at home: don’t carry tons of money with you, lock your doors, don’t leave valuables in your vehicle, don’t walk into dark alleys alone and for heaven’s sake, don’t flaunt your jewelry. Just relax and enjoy yourself!

What documents do I need to get married on St. Croix?
A Marriage License application must be obtained, completed and submitted to the court. Once the application is approved, you will need to appear in person to obtain the actual license. Some form of identification is required such as a valid drivers license or passport. Note: No physical examination or blood test is required.
Will our marriage be valid in the U.S.?
YES, your union will be recognized as a legal union by any court in the United States.
Is it difficult to get married on St. Croix?
Not at all. A marriage license needs to be obtained at the courthouse. Just plan appropriately or hire a planner to help you.
What is the population?
As of the 2020 United States Census, St. Croix's population is 41,004. According to a 2020 population count by The U.S. Census Bureau, the most recent count of Virgin Islanders totaled 87,146, with roughly 41 thousand residents on St. Croix, roughly 50 thousand residents on St. Thomas and the remainder on St. John.
What is the time zone for the US Virgin Islands?
This is an easy one, GMT-4. Our island lies in the Atlantic Time zone, which means we do not participate in Daylight Savings Time. During Spring and Summer we are on the same time as the East Coast of the U.S. until they set the clocks back for daylight savings, which makes us one hour ahead during the fall and winter.
Is the American dollar accepted?
We quit bartering with shells and coconuts, so bring all the U.S. Dollars you want to spend. Many places accept credit cards, some accept travelers checks, and some are still cash only. There are ATMs located around the island.
What language do the locals speak? Are they friendly?
English is the primary spoken language, but there is a definite dialect, or accent, that has been influenced by the French, Danish and Spanish. On St. Croix, the locals, are known as 'Crucians' and are very culturally rooted. While generally very friendly, they are a proud people and have very proper manners. Be expected to greet everyone with a 'Good Morning', 'Good Afternoon' and 'Good Night', or a simple 'Good Day' can be used at anytime. Although St. Croix is a warm, beautiful island and most of you will want to walk around with minimal clothing due to the heat, it is considered impolite and against the law to wear your bathing suits in the main towns of business. Males and females have to be covered on the top and bottom when in public areas, such as shops, restaurants and hotel lobbies.
Where are the U.S. Virgin Islands?
Our islands are surrounded by the beautiful Caribbean Sea. St. Croix sits on the 17th degree North latitude and 64th degree West longitude (17.7246° N, 64.8348° W to be exact). We are part of the larger Antilles Island chain which runs from near Florida to off the coast of South America. In laymen’s terms, we are about 1,200 miles southeast of Miami.
What islands make up the U.S. Virgin Islands?
Also known as America’s Paradise, the three main islands are St. Thomas, St. Croix and St. John. There is also a tiny island near St. Thomas and St. John called Water Island. All have very unique personalities. St. Thomas is the most metropolitan of the three with shopping abound for the cruise ship passengers that grace her shores every day. St. John is where the Virgin Islands National Park is located. It is best known for pristine beaches and nature trails ideal for hiking. St. Croix is a pleasant blend of the two. You can enjoy shopping, dining, culture, history, nature and spectacular beaches for snorkeling and scuba diving. There are also smaller surrounding cays that are part of the territory.
When is hurricane season?
Hurricane season runs from June 1 until November 30 with the peak of season being between August and October. BUT, hurricanes can occur at any time during the season. The last two major hurricanes to hit St. Croix were Hugo in 1989 and Maria in 2017, both of which hit in September. Since then, strict guide lines have been put in place to protect everybody’s safety. With hourly updates and hi-tech satellite imagery, hurricanes don’t come without plenty of warning. Preparations are made well in advance of the storm.
What are the 'Christmas Winds'?
This is the name given to the trade winds that cool our island beginning in December and sometimes lasting until February, making our island very desirable to those dealing with freezing temperatures in the north.
When is the rainy season?
Rainy season runs from August through November, with November generally being the rainiest month of the year. Showers can occur at any time, but most occur before sunrise. Showers that occur during the day are usually just passing and should not interfere with your outdoor plans, for the most part.
Typically, what is the weather like? Do you have seasons?
The weather here is usually 88 degrees, mostly sunny, 10% chance of rain. This is the forecast most days for the Caribbean in general. BUT, we know that the temperature does change, some days are rainy, and yes, some days are hotter than others.
Is there a hospital on island? What if there’s an emergency?
There is a hospital on St. Croix offering both standard and emergency medical care. The Governor Juan F. Luis Hospital is located mid-island near the Sunny Isles Shopping Center. If you require emergency attention, there is an emergency room at the hospital. There are also several Urgent Care centers for lesser emergencies. If your medical needs cannot be addressed on St. Croix, your professional physician will make a recommendation for you to go to Puerto Rico or to the nearest U.S. location for treatment.
How can I get a telephone, cable, and internet connections?
There are a couple of companies that offer home telephone, cable (or satellite) and internet services. Where can I find out more about schools for my children? What's the school system like?
There are public, parochial and several private schools to choose from for all grades. You can choose a school based on your religion (Catholic, Baptist, Seventh Day, etc.) or teaching philosophy of learning, such as Montessori. We have compiled a list of both public and private schools that can be found on our website under the LIVE section.
Where can I find out about employment opportunities?
While you can find some positions listed on job websites like Indeed, we suggest you contact the types of businesses you are interested in directly to see if you can send them your resume. Don’t ask, 'Are you hiring?' because chances are, you’ll get shut down. Instead, if you ask to send your resume and they like what they see, chances are they will find a place for you. Besides, it’s just more professional. Patience is an important lesson when seeking employment. It may take awhile to find the right fit and earn the money you need. Stay open minded.
Do I need to buy a car? Where?
You will most likely want a car, but don’t buy a car that will break the bank. We have car dealerships here that sell new or used vehicles in all price ranges. Check the local newspapers or local Facebook groups for used cars too. You can ship the car you already have to St. Croix from the east coast, but will need to change insurance and work out the specifics with your financier. There is public transportation with VITRAN Buses and shared taxi vans that pick people up who are waiting at the bus stops. After living on the island for a while, you may find that if you start walking, someone you know is likely to drive by soon and will stop and give you a ride! BUT, hitch-hiking is not recommended.
Where is the best place to live?
On St. Croix. Seriously, it just depends on your preference. Want a view? Then find a place in one of the MANY hills. Living by the water certainly has its advantages, but keep in mind the elements will be harsh on your belongings. You’ll have to upgrade to appliances that can withstand the salt air better! East…West…North Shore, South Shore they are all beautiful!
How do I find out about renting a place to live?
Check with one of our real estate agencies; most of them have a rental specialist on staff to help with long-term rentals. You can also check the classified section of the local newspaper, and word of mouth usually works pretty well. You can rent condos, stand alone home, guests houses on a larger property, apartments attached to homes (usually downstairs) and even rooms with-in private homes.
Are homes expensive?
The price of a home or condo is going to depend on the location, the size, the view and the amenities included. Some condos are very reasonable and there are also multi-million dollar homes. Lots are available to build your own home, but all materials for construction are shipped here first, making this a pricey option. We recommend you contact a real estate agent to help you find the home that is right for you.
How many tobacco products can I take back to the states?
Citizens of the U.S. who are age 21 or older are allowed up to 100 cigars (not of Cuban origin). They are also allowed up to 5 cartons, or 1,000 cigarettes duty free, per person, if purchased in the U.S. Virgin Islands.
How much liquor can I take back to the states?
Residents of the U.S. 21 years of age and older can return to the mainland with five litres of liquor, duty free. A 6th litre can be added duty free if it is a product made in the U.S. Virgin Islands, like Cruzan Rum or Captain Morgan.
Do I need a passport?
If you are a U.S. citizen: NO!! NO!! NO!! It is always recommended that you travel with your passport, as it is the easiest document to present anywhere you go. Airline and security agents at all U.S. airports will expect it from all travelers. However, because St. Croix, St. Thomas and St. John are a United States territory, it is NOT REQUIRED that you have a passport when traveling here. If you do have a valid passport though, bring it with you. Also, if you are not a U.S. Citizen, then a passport issued by your country of origin is required for entry.
What do I need to travel to the USVI? Drivers license? Birth certificate?
U.S. citizens are not currently required to have a passport to travel to the USVI. If you or someone you are traveling with do not have a passport, it is required that you present a government issued identification (such as a Drivers License) as well as an original copy of your birth certificate (with a raised seal). If you are not a U.S. citizen but want to travel to the U.S. Virgin Islands, a passport from your country of origin is required.
I will be traveling with a minor child. What documents do I need to present for them?
An ORIGINAL copy of the child’s birth certificate with a raised seal (a social security card will not suffice) AND a U.S. federal or state-issued photo identification document (such as a State ID, Military ID, Government ID, or CBP Trusted Traveler Card). Please note that you must have photographic proof of identification for children as well as adults.
What documents do I need for inter-island travel?
Only a government issue valid ID is required for travel within the United States Virgin Islands. For travel to the British Virgin Islands (BVI’s) a passport is required for U.S. Citizens.
Is it expensive to travel to St. Croix?
Flying to a tiny island in the middle of the ocean can be expensive, but aren’t you worth it? If you work with a travel agent you can get great deals on flights, accommodations, and excursions. Decide which is the best place for you to stay (see our accommodations guide) and then do your research to see if they offer a 'package deal' for the activities you are interested in. Many of the hotels and resorts do offer packages for divers, golfers, fishing enthusiasts, shoppers, history buffs, etc.
What is the best way to get to St. Croix?
The EASIEST way to get to St. Croix is by plane. There are numerous daily flights from the east coast, and connecting flights in Miami and Puerto Rico. Seaborne Airlines operates seaplane service between St. Thomas and St.Croix. St. Croix is also port of call for some cruise lines. Currently, there is also a ferry that runs between St. Thomas and St. Croix, however it runs on a limited schedule. Check out our Airlines page for more info about airlines and schedules.
Is there an airport on St. Croix? What is the airport code?
Yes. The main airport is the Henry E. Rohlsen Airport located on the South Shore near the middle of the island. The airport code is STX. There is also a seaplane terminal located on the boardwalk in downtown Christiansted.
What documents will I need to present when traveling with my pet?
If you can’t leave your furry friend at home, you will be happy to know that St. Croix is very pet friendly. There are no quarantine regulations for healthy animals. First, you need to check with your airline and make arrangements for their travel. Some airlines will not carry pets in the cabin; some can only transport animals in the belly of the plane at certain times of the year. Once you receive the OK from the airlines, dogs and cats require a health certificate signed by their current veterinarian and dated within 10 days of travel, as well as a current Rabies Vaccination Certificate. For all other animals an Import Permit issued by the U.S. Virgin Islands Department of Agriculture and dated within 30 days of arrival is required. How much duty free allowance is each person allowed?
Any U.S. resident, including children, can return, or send, to the mainland $1,600 worth of duty-free imports every thirty days. If you go over your $1,600 allowance, V.I. Purchases are dutiable at a flat rate of 6 percent on the next $1,000. U.S. residents over the age of 21 can return with five bottles of liquor duty-free or six, if one of the bottles is locally produced, such as good ol’ Cruzan Rum.
We are planning a family vacation with children of all ages. HELP!!
St. Croix is a great place for children. Lots of activities are family oriented and can be enjoyed by “kids” of all ages. Most resorts have a Kids Counselor or “camp” where you can leave the kids for a couple of hours with childcare professionals. Be sure to ask about discounted rates if you are traveling with a large group. Kids will enjoy exploring the old forts, hunting for treasures on the beach, horseback riding, learning to snorkel, kayaking and so much more.
What if there is an emergency?
If you or your child requires medical assistance while on St. Croix- you can be taken to the emergency room at the Gov. Juan F. Luis Hospital, or if it is minor, your concierge can arrange for a doctor’s visit. If your child has a known medical condition, it would be a good idea to bring necessary paperwork and extra medication with you when traveling.
Can I rent a crib? Where can I buy baby supplies?
Check with your hotelier or villa manager to see if they have a portable crib for use, most do. Baby supplies such as diapers and formula (or if you need to replace Jr’s sippy cup) can be purchased at any grocery store or one of the two Kmarts on island.
How is the shopping on St. Croix? What should I buy?
Shoppers will be happy to know that St. Croix is filled with unique shops and boutiques. Clothes, jewelry, art, furniture, textiles, pottery, scented goods, epicureans…you will find absolutely something for everyone. I’d like to play golf. How much? Do I need a tee-time?
St. Croix is home to three golf courses. Carambola Golf is a championship course designed by Robert Trent Jones, Sr. The Buccaneer Resort’s course is popular and offers lessons. The Reef Golf Course is a nine- hole course on the east end. There is even miniature golf! The green fees will vary from course to course and how many rounds you would like to play. A tee-time is always recommended, so please call in advance.
I’d like to rent a boat. Is that possible?
At this time, there are no powerboat rentals on St. Croix. But, you can rent kayaks or jet-skis or contact one of the fishing boats and chances are you can “rent” one by the hour with the captain.
I’d like to go out on a boat. What are my options?
Let me count the ways…a kayak tour or kayak rental on your own, private day sails, snorkeling trips, sunset sails, group excursions on a catamaran to Buck Island, group excursions on a glass bottom power boat, full and half day sport fishing trips…
What kinds of island tours are there?
Self guided, open air van, 4-wheel jeeps, kayaks, sailing, power boats, and so much more…you can find a list of all activities and island tours on our website.
What is the sales tax?
Zero, zip, nada, nothing. There is no sales tax on goods purchased in St. Croix. The price you see is the price you pay, no tax.
Where can I find the best souvenirs?
There are several souvenir shops in both Christiansted and Frederiksted. Please remember not to take anything from our beaches.
Should I make reservations in advance for activities I want to do?
It is always a good idea to call ahead of time. If you know there’s an activity you don’t want to miss, plan this in advance or upon arrival to ensure your preferred date is available. Some places might tell you a reservation is not needed, like at a restaurant, but others, like fishing, kayaking, or horseback riding definitely need to know in advance so that they can prepare for you. Be prepared to hear that a trip or day has been combined with another reservation (some trips require a minimum number of people).
What if I get bored on such a small island?
Are you kidding? There are active people who have been here for years and are still finding fun and exciting things to do all the time. Once you have enough of the sun and sand, check out the rain forest via horseback or an open air Jeep. You can learn to sail, scuba dive, kite surf, deep sea fish, take a sunset sail, go on a nature hike in the rain forest, hike to exquisite tide pools, tour the world’s #1 rum factory (and get free samples!), discover historic sugar plantation ruins. You get the idea. Take a look at your interests back home. History- Contact the Landmarks Society, Environmental Type- Check out our environmental association. Shop-aholic- fill your bag to your heart’s content by shopping our tropical, fun stores. Are you getting the picture that you should never be bored? Relaxed, yes. Bored, no.
What is Buck Island? Is there anywhere to stay on Buck?
Buck Island Reef National Monument is part of the National Park system and consists of land and underwater coral gardens. Full and half day trips to Buck Island are available but there are no accommodations there.
How is the scuba diving in St. Croix? Can I rent gear?
St. Croix is a top-rated scuba diving location. It is the only place where you can experience 5 unique types of diving (shore, pier, reef, wrecks, wall). And yes, of course you can rent all the gear for your dive.
Are there any nude beaches on St. Croix?
Nope. Nudity is against the law on any Virgin Islands beach.
Is there gear to rent such as chairs, umbrellas and snorkeling gear?
Most resorts and hotels have gear available for their guests; non-guests might pay a small fee. If you are staying in a private villa, condo, small inn or otherwise, ask ahead of time if these items are available for use; most keep extra gear around for their guests.
Are there any sharks?
Well, yes there are sharks. Sharks live in the ocean and our island is surrounded by the ocean. BUT, the likely- hood of you coming face to face with one while snorkeling is pretty slim, next to nil. There are a MILLION beautiful fish, coral reefs, turtles, octopus…so much to see in our waters.
Can I snorkel at the beach?
The reef that surrounds most of St. Croix is home to beautiful colorful fish, turtles, coral, sea fans and other interesting sea critters. Many beaches are a short swim to the reef or have an area that’s good for snorkeling, so ENJOY! Please remember to LOOK but don’t TOUCH the fragile coral. They can be easily harmed, and can sometimes irritate the skin.
What if I find a pretty shell? Can I take it as a souvenir?
It is not against the law, but we would prefer for you NOT to take the shell. You should not remove anything, dead or alive from the beaches.
Are there admission fees to the beaches?
No. All beaches are public, so you have free access. If visiting a beach within a resort’s property, there may be an entry fee to use their facilities.
Are the beaches crowded?
No. The beaches on St. Croix are not typically crowded. In season, there might be more people at resort beaches, or at the more popular beaches that have great snorkeling.
Are there campgrounds on St. Croix?
Yes- island style dwellings! There are unique cabins built around majestic mahogany trees in the rainforest that are available for your stay. There is also a beachfront campground.
Do the rates vary at different times of the year?
Yes. There are in-season and off-season rates. The actual dates that rates are valid depend on the business, so check with them. Typically, season runs December through May; off-season June through November. For more information on where to stay on St .Croix, please see our accommodations guide.
Can I rent a home or condo? Is this a good option for me?
If you are looking for a bit more privacy, want to come and go as you please…a home away from home- then this option is for you. Condos range from efficiency size to 3 & 4 bedrooms, pool/restaurant on site, some right on the beach. Homes (or rental villas) run the gamut from cozy one or two bedroom cottages to large, elaborate 5,6,7…bedrooms, entire properties equipped with pool; a great option for a large family or corporate vacation. Both options are ideal for those looking to cook their own meals!
Are there any small inns or B&Bs?
Some travelers prefer the intimacy of staying at an inn or B&B. They get to know the inn-keeper and get the insiders scoop on activities, places to eat, etc. St. Croix offers some beautiful inns that provide just that and more!
Are there any resorts on St. Croix?
Of course! We are still a sleepy little island that offers luxury and the comforts of home, but no hotel is larger than 200 rooms. You can find the larger style resorts that offer a full array of amenities on all areas of the island.
What if I need to do laundry?
Check with your hotel/resort; some offer this service in house. Otherwise, there are PLENTY of laundromats where you can sit and do your own or drop off and pick up later.
Are the electrical outlets like the ones in my home?
Yep. Just like the ones at home. No adapter is necessary. But, you might want to re-think bringing all of those electrical gadgets; you are on vacation after all. Do you really need to blow-dry your hair? It’s just going to get wet again!
Should I bring a sweater for cool Caribbean nights?
Maybe a light-weight, long sleeve cover up to keep the breeze off of you and some restaurants are air conditioned. The lows in the evening dip into the low to mid 70’s…BRRRRR. Bottom line: pack light. Ladies can dress in a nice sundress for dinner; men can wear slacks and a breezy button down. Other essentials: SUNBOCK- and lots of it, wear it every day and re-apply often. ALSO: bathing suits, comfortable walking shoes, hat; don’t forget your prescriptions and travel documents.
