What will 2009 bring for St. Croix? Time will only tell, but if the past few weeks are any indication, the outlook is terrific! Here are a few of the things I am looking forward to in 2009:
The 2008 St. Croix Boat Parade was such a treat this year! The organizers had every right to be concerned with the amount of boats being able to participate considering almost 40 boats were lost to Hurricane Omar; several were regular participants in the annual holiday event. To everyone’s delight, there was not a lack of boats to participate in this year’s event.
I think the final count was 21 boats, with Lady Jasmyn holding on to her title as Best Boat Overall. The evening was filled with festive music, Mocko Jumbies and a large crowd of people on the boardwalk cheering the boats on as they sailed and motored through the harbor.
And as if arranged and timed perfectly, a LARGE yellow-orange moon started to rise above Hotel on the Cay just as the dazzling display of fireworks began. The show lasted about half and hour and really lit up the sky!
We are sure looking forward to this even next year!
I try not to make this a grip board; there are just too many GOOD things going on. But I got my fair share of both recently, and I thought it would make you laugh. Besides, you’re probably stuck in the cold somewhere.
The Good: The sweet Food Town checker who recognized the fact that I was carrying an over-tired 2 year old in my arms while wearing a tube top. Not a good combo; I am sure the patrons of Food Town were not looking for a peep show when they went in to get milk. She saw I had my hands full, asked me what I needed, directed one of the baggers to get it and take it to my car. That is service!
The Bad: 45 minutes Monday morning in the post office to purchase a generic roll of 42 cent American Flag stamps. Not baby Jesus, not Purple Heart, not Kwanza, not whatever; just regular ol’ generic stamps. You’d think I’d ask for gold plated stamps.
Ok, really, what do I have to complain about? http://www.gotostcroix.com/live/beachcam.php
I wanted to share an email from a woman who lived here during what some might call “St. Croix’s Hey-Day”. It made me, once again, thankful for this island, no matter how mad I might get at it sometimes. It made me realize how far we have come, yet somehow, been able to remain the same. How does that work? Anyway, here is an excerpt she has allowed me to share with all of you:
Anna,
I am a nurse living in California who lived on island in 1984-85 and recently returned as a tourist to visit. I used your blog and website as a primary source of info and had a great but oh too short visit. I was so glad to see the island has changed not too much and the environmental protection and respect seems true. I stayed @ Tamarind Reef for the nostalgia -used to live in marina and work @ the Deep End. That view is so wonderful.
Thanks Susan B for your letter, I am sure there are many people who feel the same as you, and many more who are waiting and planning to experience it for them selves.
